A marijuana addiction is no different than many other addictions that plague people nowadays. Marijuana can be deceptive, as it appears the most benign on the pecking order of illegal drugs. Unfortunately, marijuana can produce some negative consequences and some dangerous side-effects that can wreak havoc in the users life.

Addictions are usually defined as a pattern of use over time with a substance and or behavior that is usually associated with increased usage, and negative consequences. If I can’t go a day without a particular substance and or behavior, that usually indicates a problem, indicative of an addiction. I know what you might be saying, “but I only use on weekends.” Well unfortunately, “binging” so to speak, like using cannabis on Friday and Saturday only, does not remove the “addictive” label.

Marijuana addiction is part physical, and part psychological. What the user has to be concerned about with smoking marijuana is the primary chemical T.H.C. that is inherent to the cannabis. T.H.C. or chemically known as (delta-9-tetrathydrocannabinol) is the main psychoactive substance in weed. T.H.C. is stored in the users “fatty tissue”, sometime up to ninety days. This could be a problem if you are currently working, and your employer decides to give a “random drug screen.” If I am aware of that possibility, along with the negative consequences that would follow, yet I continue to smoke weed, then it would be safe to assume that I either don’t need a job, or am struggling with an addiction to marijuana.

A marijuana addiction can create negative consequences similar to other drugs. Loss of employment, misuse of finances, relationship and family struggles, D.U.I., and many more. Smoking cannabis on a regular basis has also shown signs of impaired learning ability, decreased motivation, and insomnia. Other side effects of marijuana include general anxiety, leading into panic attacks, weight loss, and nervousness.

Fortunately there is help for those struggling with an addiction to cannabis. There are many support groups, and if necessary, medical intervention for the more extreme cases.. Getting help for marijuana is only a phone call away. Don’t wait for negative consequences to come before you take action.

Have a goal and write it down. This is one more thing you could do to ensure you can withdraw from marijuana effectively. You have to set goals for yourself in which you have to mention facts like dates by when you want to totally cleanse yourself of marijuana. Remember that date and work towards it. Try making it an important day like your birthday or your anniversary so that it is a day you won’t forget as it means a lot to you and your recovery.
